Mr. Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun the Inspector-General of Police explained that the police are fully prepared to provide full security during and after the scheduled nationwide protest.
He said that the key component of the police's management approach is to regularly engage with tactical Commanders with the objective of conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the internal security situation then to identify emerging threats and develop effective countermeasures to strengthen the security posture.
"I address you today with a sense of urgency and patriotic zeal, commending your vital contributions to national security and the ultimate sacrifices made during joint military operations. Despite achievements, persistent security challenges demand our swift and professional attention" Egbetokun said during a media briefing.
The Police Boss emphasized that though the police were aware of some imminent anti-government protesters which posed a significant threat to national security but the police objective is to evaluate, discuss and implement effective operational strategies to ensure public safety and security.
"While acknowledging the right to peaceful protest, available intelligence suggests the planned protest is a deliberate attempt to destabilize the government and undermine public safety. We must leverage our expertise to develop and execute a robust plan addressing potential risks and challenges" he said.
He advised that Nigerians should be vigilant and prepared to prevent chaos, drawing lessons from the 2020 #EndSARS protests. That the police paramount objective is to safeguard public safety, maintain law and order, and protect citizens' rights and well-being.
That the police have begun a diligent monitoring of the developments and communications related to these planned events. He also acknowledged the presence of groups advocating for peaceful protests, emphasizing the right to peaceful assembly as a fundamental democratic right. However, he raised concerns about individuals and groups who, under the guise of peaceful protests, harbor violent intentions. He pointed out that some are attempting to replicate recent events in Kenya, which have been marked by unrest and violence.
He provided a historical context, referencing Nigeria's own experiences with violent protests, including the ENDSARS events, which resulted in significant loss of life, destruction of properties, and widespread chaos. He expressed grave concern over any potential for similar incidents to occur, emphasizing the tragic consequences that can ensue. In light of these concerns, the Police Boss urged all citizens to exercise their rights responsibly and peacefully. He reiterated that while the police respect the right to peaceful protest, they are committed to maintaining public order and safety. He then assured the public that the police will be on high alert and ready to respond appropriately to any form of violence or illegal activity.
The Inspector General of Police called for calm and urging all parties involved to engage in dialogue and constructive engagement rather than resorting to violence. He reaffirmed the police's dedication to protecting the rights and safety of all citizens. He commended those who have spoken out against violent protests and mentioned the Nigeria police have intelligence reports of foreign mercenaries planning to disrupt the peace by using the peaceful protest as a disguise. He advised caution Nigerians to reconsider participating in protests, emphasizing that even peaceful protests might not be suitable at this time. Then also highlighted that Nigeria is currently undergoing positive changes and urged patience while the government works on these transitions. The Inspector General of Police emphasized the Nigeria police's recognition of citizens' constitutional rights to peacefully protest as a means of expressing their views on governance. He urged potential protesters to notify their state's Commissioner of Police, so that the police can provide security and ensure that the protest proceeds smoothly and without incidents. This collaboration aims to facilitate peaceful and orderly demonstrations.
He then gave additional guidelines for organizing peaceful protests which are as follows:
1. *Protest Details* Organizers should provide the police with information on the planned routes and assembly points.
2. *Timing*: The expected time frame for the protest should be communicated.
3. *Contact Information*: Organizers must give the police their contact details, including phone numbers.
4. *Preventive Measures*: Details on measures to prevent hijackers, criminal elements, and potential troublemakers should be shared with the police.
That this information will help the police in several ways:
1. *Personnel Deployment*: Adequate personnel can be deployed to ensure public safety.
2. *Route Management*: The police can assist in determining appropriate routes for the protest.
3. *Communication*: Establishing communication channels with protest leaders will help address any emerging issues during the protest.
4. *Risk Minimization*: These measures aim to reduce the risk of violence, property damage, and other criminal activities during the protest.
