The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has apprehended a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for trafficking a large consignment of ‘Canadian Loud,’ a potent strain of synthetic cannabis. Munju was arrested on Thursday, 3rd October 2024, during the inward clearance of passengers from a KLM flight from Canada.
The operatives discovered 74 parcels of the illegal substance, weighing 35.20 kilograms, hidden in two of her three bags. Munju, visiting Nigeria for the first time, confessed that she was recruited online and promised $10,000 CAD to deliver the drugs in Lagos, claiming she needed the money to finance her master’s degree program in Canada.
In another major operation, NDLEA officers intercepted a shipment of 13,298,000 opioid pills and 338,253 bottles of codeine-based syrup at the Port Harcourt Ports in Onne, Rivers State. The drugs, worth over N9 billion, were recovered during a joint inspection of three containers arriving from India. The illegal consignment included various forms of Tramadol, Tapentadol, and Carisoprodol. The NDLEA's swift action, in collaboration with Nigerian Customs and other stakeholders, prevented these drugs from entering the Nigerian market.
The agency also made a significant bust at Tincan seaport, Lagos, where 100 parcels of ‘Canadian Loud’ weighing 50 kilograms were discovered in a container loaded with imported vehicles. The consignment had been traced to a warehouse in Ikorodu following intelligence reports. A suspect, Abubakar Shuaibu Ibrahim, was arrested in connection with the seizure. In another operation, NDLEA officers in Taraba State intercepted a commercial bus loaded with concealed opioids, including tramadol and codeine-based syrup, leading to the arrest of two suspects.
In Lagos, the agency arrested a woman, Bolanle Ajenifuja, in Ojo for producing 700 liters of 'skuchies,' a local cocktail mixed with illicit drugs. NDLEA operatives also destroyed nearly 10,000 kilograms of cannabis during a raid on two farms located on the Edo-Ondo state border. Three suspects were arrested, and 48 kilograms of processed cannabis were seized.
The NDLEA, through its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, continued its efforts to raise awareness about drug abuse in schools, religious centers, and communities across the country. The agency's Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the dedication of NDLEA operatives in Lagos, Rivers, Edo, and Taraba, acknowledging their crucial role in the agency’s balanced approach to drug supply reduction and public awareness initiatives.
